Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Manipur on 13 September, inaugurated 17 infrastructure projects from the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal.
With a total investment of ₹1,200 crore, these initiatives reflect the Centre’s continued commitment to strengthening Manipur’s development under the broader vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and ‘Viksit Manipur’.
He asserted that unity is essential to drive the state’s progress, particularly in the face of recent challenges.
Without directly referencing ethnic tensions, PM Modi emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between the valley and the hill regions.
Among the key projects inaugurated were the new Civil Secretariat and the Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri in Imphal West, aimed at improving administrative efficiency.
PM Modi also virtually opened two state Bhavans in New Delhi and Kolkata, built at a cost of ₹206 crore, which will serve as vital support centres for Manipuri residents in major cities.
He noted that these projects would significantly improve governance, access to public services, and inter-state engagement for Manipuri citizens.
Empowering Women Through Ima Markets
Underscoring his government’s focus on women-led development, PM Modi inaugurated four new all-women-run ‘Ima Markets’ in Tengnoupal, Noney, Pallel, and Moirang.
These marketplaces, he said, would empower women entrepreneurs and stimulate local economies. He praised Manipuri women for being frontrunners in various sectors and recognised their contributions to the nation.
PM Modi also touched upon the recent GST reforms set to take effect from 22 September. These include reductions in GST on cement, construction materials, and hotel stays—steps that will make travel, tourism, and housing more affordable.
He highlighted the positive impact this will have on the Northeast, particularly tourism-driven states like Manipur.
The Prime Minister recalled that Manipur’s Moirang was the first site in India where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s INA hoisted the tricolour.
He also reminded the audience of the renaming of Mount Harriet in the Andaman Islands to ‘Mount Manipur’ in honour of the state’s freedom fighters.
Recognising Manipur’s contributions to Indian sports, he noted the establishment of the National Sports University in the state and reaffirmed India’s goal to become a global sports powerhouse—with Manipuri athletes playing a key role.
PM Modi concluded his address by reaffirming the Centre’s sensitivity to the state’s needs. From tackling flood challenges to empowering youth and women, the government, he said, will continue to walk alongside the people of Manipur.
The inaugurated projects, including bridges, residential schools, and riverfront development, are expected to fuel growth, employment, and unity in the region.
