Five Overlooked Warning Signs Of Kidney Disease Highlighted By Nephrologist

A nephrologist outlines seven subtle symptoms often mistaken for tiredness but which could indicate serious kidney problems, urging early awareness and medical attention.

Many people dismiss persistent tiredness as a by-product of busy lifestyles, but chronic fatigue may be a warning of deeper health issues.

In an Instagram post dated August 14, nephrologist Dr Satyanarayana Garre drew attention to five overlooked symptoms that could point to kidney disease rather than simple exhaustion.

According to Dr Garre, swelling in the feet, ankles or even the face is not always ‘water weight’ but may reflect the kidneys’ inability to expel excess fluid. Changes in urine, whether in colour, frothiness or frequency, are another key indicator that something may be amiss with renal function.

He adds that feeling constantly drained, even after adequate sleep, can result from toxin build-up in the bloodstream when kidney function declines. Puffy eyes on waking could signal protein leakage into urine, a classic sign of damaged kidney filters.

Dr Satyanarayan Garre highlighted 5 signs as mentioned below:

1. Swelling in Extremities and Face

Dr Garre explains that swelling in the feet, ankles, or face may be more than just water retention. It can signal that the kidneys are struggling to remove excess fluid from the body, a common early sign of kidney dysfunction.

2. Changes in Urination

Noticeable changes in urine, including unusual colour, frothiness, or altered frequency, may indicate that the kidneys are having trouble filtering waste. Dr Garre emphasises that even mild deviations from normal patterns should not be ignored.

3. Constant Exhaustion

Feeling perpetually tired despite sufficient rest may be due to the accumulation of toxins in the bloodstream when kidney function declines. Chronic fatigue can therefore be an early alert for kidney disease.

4. Puffy Eyes Upon Waking

Waking up with swollen or puffy eyes is often dismissed as a sleep issue, but Dr Garre notes that this can result from protein leakage into the urine, signalling kidney filter damage.

5. Metallic Taste and Persistent Bad Breath

A metallic taste in the mouth or ongoing bad breath may indicate that the body is failing to clear waste properly, reflecting reduced kidney efficiency.

Importance of Early Detection

Dr Garre stresses that recognising these warning signs early allows for timely intervention, which can prevent complications and help maintain kidney health. Individuals noticing these symptoms are encouraged to consult a healthcare professional promptly.

By paying closer attention to the body’s subtle signals, even symptoms often dismissed as simple fatigue may serve as a lifesaving alert.
