Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, announced ₹1,200 crore in financial assistance for Uttarakhand during his visit to Dehradun to assess the damage caused by recent cloudbursts, landslides, and incessant rainfall.
The announcement comes as the state grapples with the aftermath of widespread devastation across several districts.
The Prime Minister declared an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those seriously injured in flood-related incidents.
Expressing his condolences to the grieving families, PM Modi met with survivors and reassured them of the government’s unwavering support.
In an emotional interaction with families affected by the natural calamity, the Prime Minister conveyed his solidarity and acknowledged the immense loss they had suffered.
He further stated that children orphaned due to the floods and landslides will be supported through the PM CARES for Children scheme, ensuring their long-term care and education.
Long-Term Rehabilitation Through a Multi-Pronged Approach
Emphasising a comprehensive and long-term response to the crisis, PM Modi outlined a multi-dimensional strategy that includes:
- Rebuilding homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Gramin, particularly through a ‘Special Project’ submitted by the Uttarakhand government for flood-damaged rural households.
- Restoration of infrastructure, including damaged national highways and rural roads.
- Reconstruction of schools and public buildings damaged in the floods.
- Distribution of mini-kits for livestock, to aid farmers whose animals were affected.
- Relief support through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
The Union Government has already deployed Inter-Ministerial Central Teams to assess the scale of destruction.
PM Modi noted that the government will consider additional support based on their report. He also mentioned that the announced measures fall under the Disaster Management Act and serve as interim relief.
The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts of the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, and local administration in providing immediate rescue and relief operations.
He stated that the Central Government would continue to work in close coordination with the Uttarakhand government to ensure effective disaster response and long-term recovery.
PM Modi concluded by assuring that the Central Government will address the situation comprehensively and extend further assistance after reviewing the State’s damage assessment and the Central team’s report.
