Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated President Irfaan Ali on his victory in Guyana’s General and Regional Elections.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Heartiest congratulations to President Irfaan Ali on the resounding success in General and Regional elections. I look forward to further strengthening India-Guyana partnership anchored in strong and historical people-to-people ties.”

Responding on his official X account, President Ali expressed his appreciation and pledged to continue working with PM Modi, the Government and the people of India.

India and Guyana share deep-rooted ties that date back to the British colonial era, when large numbers of Indians migrated to Guyana.
Today, Guyanese citizens of Indian origin maintain vibrant links with their ancestral homeland, reinforcing a strong cultural bond.
Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1965 with the opening of a Commission of India in Georgetown, which became a full-fledged High Commission after Guyana’s independence in 1966.
Over the decades, the two nations have collaborated in areas ranging from economic cooperation and cultural exchange to development projects.
Expanding Partnership Across Trade & Technology
Both countries are now focusing on strengthening partnerships in trade, investment and technology.
Guyana’s membership of the Organisation of Islamic Countries since 1998 has also expanded its global profile, opening further avenues for cooperation.
In July this year, the Indian High Commission in Guyana hosted a roundtable on ‘India-CARICOM Cooperation in Resource Mapping, Climate Change and Agricultural Research & Development’.
The event was part of ongoing efforts to implement outcomes from the second India-CARICOM Summit held in Georgetown in November 2024, where PM Modi highlighted innovation and science as pillars of India’s engagement with Caribbean nations.
The exchange of congratulatory messages between the two leaders sets the stage for a renewed phase of collaboration across multiple sectors, reinforcing the historic and people-centred partnership between India and Guyana.
