The Guwahati Police Crime Branch registered a case against journalist and YouTuber Abhisar Sharma after a local resident, Alok Baruah, lodged a complaint accusing him of spreading content that maligns the governments of Assam and India.
According to the FIR, Sharma allegedly published and circulated a video on YouTube that contained statements denigrating the government of Assam and the Union of India.
Baruah claimed that Sharma acted with ‘vested interests and malafide intent’ to disrepute duly elected governments.
Charges Under BNS
Police filed the FIR under Sections 152, 195, and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The complaint alleged that Sharma’s remarks not only ridiculed the government but also endangered the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India.
Baruah objected to Sharma’s statements, accusing the Assam Chief Minister of communal politics and alleging that the government survives by Hindu-Muslim polarisation.
The complainant further claimed that Sharma mocked the principle of Ram Rajya and attempted to create distrust and hatred against the state government.
Alleged Impact of the Content
The FIR stated that Sharma’s content went beyond criticism, alleging it amounted to provoking public disorder and exciting disaffection.
The complaint read, “The article published/circulated by the accused Abhisar Sharma is not mere criticism but amounts to an attempt to excite disaffection, provoke public disorder, and endanger the unity and integrity of India by portraying the State as corrupt, communal, and illegitimate.”
The police confirmed that they had registered the case and would proceed with further investigation into the allegations made against Sharma.
