
In a landmark move for public education, Adani Foundation and Adani Electricity signed a Letter of Agreement with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to expand Project Utthan.
This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative will now benefit over 1.5 lakh students across 947 municipal schools in Mumbai, with a focus on strengthening Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) skills from Grades 1 to 4.
Launched in 2021 under a public-private partnership model, Project Utthan has already improved learning outcomes for over 25,000 students in 83 BMC schools located in Malad, Dahisar, Borivali, Chembur, and Kurla.
The initiative has brought about measurable change by creating inclusive and engaging classroom environments, improving academic engagement and learning outcomes.
The programme aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and NIPUN Bharat Mission. It aims to ensure every child in Mumbai’s public schools gains essential literacy and numeracy skills.
It also aligns with the city’s vision to significantly improve performance in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2027–28.
Utthan Sahayaks to Provide On-Ground Support
The authorities will appoint 316 trained female ‘Utthan Sahayaks’ to implement the programme effectively. These learning assistants will work alongside teachers to support students who are irregular, academically behind, or disengaged from school.
Their role is pivotal in delivering personalised learning support and promoting joyful, child-centric classrooms.
The initiative will introduce student-centred methodologies and provide learning practice materials, particularly for Grade 10 students, to boost academic performance across key subjects.
Adani Foundation and Adani Electricity are fully funding the entire project as part of their long-term commitment to educational equity.
The BMC Education Department will offer infrastructural and logistical support, ensuring seamless execution across the city.
Project Utthan represents one of India’s largest foundational learning interventions, with the potential to reshape public education in Mumbai.
It aims not only to enhance academic outcomes but also to create lasting systems that leave no child behind.
