Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday set off on a two-nation tour to the United Kingdom and Maldives, expressing optimism that the visit will deliver concrete results and strengthen India’s external partnerships.
The first leg of the tour, from 23 to 24 July, will take PM Modi to the UK at the invitation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This marks PM Modi’s fourth official visit to the country.
Before departure, PM Modi stated, “India and UK share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that has witnessed significant progress in recent years. Our collaboration spans a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health and people-to-people ties.”
PM Modi said he would be engaging in bilateral talks with PM Starmer, with a focus on boosting economic ties to promote mutual growth and job creation.
“I also look forward to calling on His Majesty King Charles III during the visit,” the Prime Minister added.
The second part of the visit, from 25 to 26 July, will see the Prime Minister travel to the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu.
This will be PM Modi’s third visit to the Maldives and the first by any foreign head of state or government under President Muizzu’s leadership.
Guest of Honour at Maldives Independence Day
A major highlight of the visit will be PM Modi attending the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives on July 26 as the Guest of Honour.
This year also commemorates six decades of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
The Prime Minister noted that his visit reaffirms India’s commitment to its maritime neighbourhood under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ initiative and Vision MAHASAGAR.
He said he looks forward to engaging with President Muizzu and other leaders in the Maldives to further their shared vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. The goal, he added, is to enhance cooperation for peace and prosperity across the Indian Ocean Region.
“I am confident that the visit will yield tangible outcomes, benefiting our people and advancing our Neighbourhood First Policy,” the Prime Minister asserted.
