India, in collaboration with key UN member states, co-chaired a high-level meeting of the Group of Friends for Accountability for Crimes Against Peacekeepers at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The session reaffirmed India’s long-standing dedication to justice for UN peacekeepers who operate in perilous environments across the world.
This initiative builds upon the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 2589, adopted in 2021 and spearheaded by India during its presidency of the Security Council.
The resolution calls on member states to take decisive legal action against those responsible for violence against peacekeepers.
Over 1,000 UN personnel have lost their lives to malicious acts since 1948, making this an urgent and ongoing concern.
India’s Unwavering Commitment
Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, Permanent Representative of India to the UN, addressed the gathering, stating, “Peacekeepers operate in increasingly volatile regions, facing grave risks. Yet, accountability for attacks remains rare. This failure encourages further violence and jeopardises global peace efforts.”
He further emphasised that justice is not only a legal necessity but a strategic imperative for the success and credibility of UN peacekeeping.
“Justice enhances peacekeepers’ safety and operational integrity. Ensuring accountability must be seen as our shared responsibility,” he added.
India’s leadership in peacekeeping dates back over seven decades. As the largest cumulative troop-contributing nation to the United Nations, India has deployed more than 300,000 peacekeepers to missions globally.
Tragically, 182 Indian personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their dedication stands as a testament to India’s unwavering support for global peace and stability.
A Global Stand Against Impunity
The Group of Friends, established in December 2022 during India’s Security Council presidency, seeks to rally international will to end impunity for crimes against peacekeepers.
The recent meeting underlined the collective responsibility of UN member states to deliver justice, not only for fallen personnel, but also to uphold the legitimacy and future of peacekeeping operations.
India’s active role as Co-Chair of the Group is seen as a powerful statement of leadership in fostering a rules-based international order and safeguarding those who risk their lives for global peace.
India’s ongoing advocacy reinforces the need for comprehensive international cooperation in prosecuting crimes against peacekeepers and ensuring robust protective measures.
As a co-chair, India continues to push for reforms that will protect lives and preserve the efficacy of United Nations peace operations worldwide.
