Russia on Tuesday dismissed US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose massive economic sanctions, calling it a theatrical move that would not affect Moscow’s stance.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, mocked Trump’s warning, describing it as a ‘theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin’ and said Russia was unbothered.
Taking to X, Medvedev posted, “Trump issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin. The world shuddered, expecting the consequences. Belligerent Europe was disappointed. Russia didn’t care.”

Trump Issues 50-Day Deadline
This was Moscow’s first official response after Trump threatened on Monday to impose a 100 per cent secondary tariff on countries that buy oil, gas, and uranium from Russia.
The US President said he was ‘very unhappy’ with Moscow’s intransigence in reaching a peace deal with Ukraine.
Speaking at the White House alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, President Trump said the US would apply the tariff if Russia failed to negotiate peace within 50 days.
“We’re very, very unhappy with them, and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs. If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 per cent, you’d call them secondary tariffs,” he stated.
US Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker warned that Trump’s move could provoke a strong response from Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said the supply of US weapons to Ukraine, combined with fresh sanctions, would likely trigger retaliation.
Whitaker told Fox News that major buyers of Russian oil, such as China and India, would feel the impact of the new tariffs. He stressed that the effects would not be limited to Europe or Ukraine alone.
The US President repeated his plan to impose ‘very severe tariffs’ on Russia. He criticised President Vladimir Putin, saying, “My conversations with him are very pleasant, and then the missiles go off at night.”
President Trump added that he had tried to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine several times but failed. “I felt we had a deal about four times, but it just kept going on and on,” he said.
He also announced that the US would send Patriot missiles and other weapons to Ukraine.
