PM Modi Applauds Cuba’s Integration Of Ayurveda In Public Health

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Cuba’s move to formally adopt Ayurveda, India’s ancient healing system, into its public healthcare.

During his conversation with President Miguel Diaz-Canel on the summit’s sidelines, PM Modi also proposed that Cuba recognise the Indian pharmacopoeia.

This step, he noted, could unlock access to high-quality Indian generic medicines within Cuba’s healthcare framework.

Cuba is globally renowned for its advanced medical services and has extended healthcare support to several developing countries.

This recognition of Ayurveda marks a new chapter in India-Cuba health cooperation and showcases the global acceptance of traditional Indian medicine.

PM Modi noted the 5,000-year-old system’s roots in the Vedas, underlining how Ayurveda reflects the holistic approach of Indian culture toward health and life.

He stated on social media that their meeting was “wonderful,” and expressed optimism about the potential growth in bilateral economic and technological ties.

Digital cooperation & future prospects

In addition to health, the leaders explored broader avenues of partnership.

President Diaz-Canel expressed a strong interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and Unified Payment Interface (UPI), which has positioned India as a global leader in fintech innovation.

Citing the strength of bilateral ties built over 65 years, they discussed possible collaboration in science, innovation, agriculture, energy, and biopharmaceuticals.

Both agreed that such partnerships could benefit the BRICS community and the broader Global South, particularly in addressing health crises, climate change, and food security.

They also talked about strengthening disaster management systems.

PM Modi emphasised India’s willingness to work jointly on critical global challenges, while President Diaz Canel pointed out Cuba’s achievements in food and pharmaceutical production.

India-Cuba: A historic bond

The Indian Prime Minister recalled the long-standing relationship between the two nations, tracing back to the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the countries’ shared leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement.

Over the years, India has consistently extended financial and humanitarian assistance to Cuba, strengthening diplomatic and developmental ties.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders reviewed progress in economic cooperation, capacity building, and multilateral collaboration.

They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthen ties rooted in mutual respect and shared values.

PM Modi’s appreciation of Cuba’s embrace of Ayurveda signals a proud moment for India, as its traditional wisdom finds increasing global relevance and recognition.
