PM Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil on Saturday evening (local time) as part of his five-nation tour.
He will participate in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro and later undertake a state visit to Brasília at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Ceremonial welcome at Galeão airport
PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome upon landing at Galeão International Airport. This marks the fourth leg of his five-country diplomatic mission, which has included stops in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina.
Taking to social media, the Prime Minister wrote, “Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I will take part in the BRICS Summit and later go to their capital, Brasília, for a state visit on the invitation of President Lula. Hoping for a productive round of meetings and interactions during this visit.”
Strengthening BRICS and bilateral relations
During his stay in Brazil, PM Modi will:
- Attend the BRICS Summit on July 6–7 in Rio de Janeiro.
- Travel to Brasília for a state visit, where he will hold bilateral talks with President Lula.
These discussions will focus on expanding the strategic partnership between India and Brazil in several key sectors, including trade, defence, energy, technology, agriculture, health, space, and people-to-people ties.
This visit marks the first bilateral trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Brazil in almost 60 years, highlighting renewed momentum in India-Brazil relations.
PM Modi is also expected to hold multiple bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit with other participating leaders.
Expanded BRICS and India’s commitment
BRICS—originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, making it one of the most significant alliances of emerging economies globally.
PM Modi, speaking before his departure, reaffirmed India’s commitment to the BRICS platform, “As a founding member, India is committed to BRICS as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies. Together, we strive for a more peaceful, equitable, just, democratic, and balanced multipolar world order.”
Prior to arriving in Brazil, PM Modi concluded a historic visit to Argentina, where he became the first Indian Prime Minister in 57 years to undertake a bilateral trip to the country. He held comprehensive discussions with President Javier Milei, focusing on:
- Diversifying trade
- Defence cooperation
- Collaboration in energy, mining, pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals
After completing his engagements in Brazil, PM Modi will travel to Namibia, the final destination on his five-nation diplomatic tour, aimed at enhancing India’s engagement across Latin America and Africa.
