In a moving gesture during her welcome address on 4 July, Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamala Persad Bissessar recited a poem written by PM Narendra Modi, drawn from his Gujarati poetry book Aankh Aa Dhanya Che.
The verses—loosely translated—evoked shared memories and collective endurance:
“In the recesses of my mind, I travel far into the past, and each phase I see unfolds a memory. Each visage is easily recognised, nothing remains hidden—for the truth is plain to see. Our companions, with whom we suffered, are never forgotten. Together we endured those hardships, and in the end, they become the journey itself.”
PM Bissessar emphasised that these lines resonate deeply with the historical connection between India and the Caribbean.
She underscored PM Modi’s strong emotional bond with the Indian diaspora.
A warm welcome & high praise
She said that PM Modi’s presence honours the moment and celebrates shared history rather than just fulfilling protocol, adding, “We welcome a leader whose visit goes beyond protocol and is a profound honour for us. I feel deeply privileged to welcome one of the world’s most respected and admired visionary leaders, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.”
Bissessar applauded PM Modi’s global vision, saying, “Through your visionary and futuristic initiatives, you have modernised the Indian economy, empowered over a billion citizens, and above all, instilled pride into the hearts of all Indians all over the world.”
The Prime Minister highlighted Modi’s vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic, showcasing his leadership and global humanitarian efforts.
India’s Vaccine Maitri initiative supplied vaccines to Trinidad and Tobago and many other countries facing urgent medical needs.
She praised his humanitarian spirit and global compassion.
PM Modi’s visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999 and his maiden trip to the country in an official capacity.
The invitation from PM Bissessar signals a renewed era of diplomatic goodwill, prioritising cultural exchange, shared heritage, and mutual respect.
By reciting PM Modi’s poem, PM Persad Bissessar honoured his literary expression as well as the lasting cultural and emotional ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago.
Her address combined personal reflection, diplomatic warmth, and high praise, heralding a strengthened bond between the two nations.
