PM Modi’s Canada Visit Inspires Hope Among Indian Diaspora For Renewed Ties

As PM Modi prepares to attend the G7 Summit in Canada, members of the Indian diaspora express hope for a reset in India-Canada ties.

PM Modi’s Canada Visit Sparks Hope For Stronger Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Canada on Monday to participate in the G7 Summit, following an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The visit, PM Modi’s first to the country in several years, has generated considerable enthusiasm among the Indian diaspora, who view the occasion as a potential turning point in the two nations’ ties.

The Indian community in Canada, ranging from professionals to entrepreneurs, is optimistic about the impact of PM Modi’s visit.

Tarun Jain, a Toronto-based IT professional, expressed his excitement: “There is a lot of enthusiasm in the Indian community. We still cannot believe that he is coming.”

He also stressed the contribution of Indians to the Canadian economy, noting, “The NRIs include doctors, engineers, and students. Every Indian wants stronger India-Canada relations, which will benefit both countries.”

Calls for economic collaboration

Gautam Sevda, a Vancouver businessman, pointed out the complementarity of the two nations.

“India is the youngest country, and Canada has abundant natural resources. Both nations can benefit immensely by working together,” he said.

Similarly, entrepreneur Akshay Saxena remarked, “The visit is a good initiative. PM Modi has transformed India into the world’s fourth-largest economy. Now, all nations want to partner with India.”

For many Indians in Canada, the visit holds personal significance.

Rahul Kumar, another IT professional, said, “India is our janmabhoomi, Canada is our karmabhoomi. There’s great admiration for PM Modi among Indians here. India needs energy, and Canada has that. We are alike in some ways, and complementary in others.”

Relations between India and Canada had deteriorated sharply in 2023, when then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations against India, which New Delhi firmly denied.

India, in turn, criticised Canada for harbouring extremist elements and failing to act against threats targeting Indian diplomats.

Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit is now being viewed as a gesture of reconciliation.

Both sides appear prepared to move past the tension and explore avenues of renewed cooperation.

The Indian diaspora sees the G7 Summit and PM Modi’s presence as an opportunity to reset bilateral engagement.

As Canada is set to host the summit and chart its global course under a new prime minister, Indo-Canadian ties may enter a more constructive phase.

The Indian community remains hopeful that the emotional, cultural, and economic bonds shared between the two democracies will guide their leaders towards a stronger and more collaborative partnership.
