A 42-year-old woman in Kerala’s Malappuram district tested positive for the deadly Nipah virus on Thursday, prompting immediate action from state health officials.
The woman, who had been suffering from a persistent fever and other Nipah-like symptoms, initially tested negative in two rounds of testing at a government laboratory in Kozhikode.
However, her condition failed to improve, prompting a third test.
That sample, sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune, returned positive for Nipah on Thursday.
Patient Isolated In Perinthalmanna Hospital
Doctors have admitted the woman to a hospital in Perinthalmanna, where she remains in isolation.
Health officials are now tracking her contacts and preparing to implement containment protocols in her locality.
Authorities revealed that two members of the woman’s family had recently recovered from a long bout of fever.
Moreover, the unexplained death of the family’s pet dog had already raised concerns among local health workers.
Recurring Nipah Threat Since 2018
Malappuram and neighbouring districts have seen multiple Nipah outbreaks since the first case in South India emerged in 2018.

That initial outbreak claimed 18 lives. More recently, in 2024, two young individuals succumbed to the virus, keeping health authorities on constant alert whenever residents report prolonged fever.
According to the World Health Organization, the Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease spread by fruit bats, either directly to humans or via infected animals and contaminated food.
It causes a wide range of symptoms, from mild respiratory issues to fatal encephalitis.
Critically, there is no known vaccine or cure for either humans or animals.
Supportive care remains the only available treatment.
Health Officials Intensify Monitoring Efforts
District health teams have begun identifying individuals who may have come into contact with the infected woman.
Authorities will soon announce precautionary measures to prevent a possible spread in the community.
With Malappuram having a history of Nipah cases, health experts remain vigilant and are urging residents to report any prolonged fever or unusual symptoms without delay.
