Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the 6th edition of the India Steel 2025 conference virtually, outlined India’s expanding role in the global steel industry and shared the nation’s vision for future growth in this sector.
The conference, held from 24 to 26 April at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, aims to explore the potential and opportunities within India’s emerging steel industry.
PM Modi emphasised the pivotal role of the steel sector in India’s development, stating that it forms the bedrock of the nation’s progress.
With India targeting the ambitious goal of becoming a USD 5 trillion economy, the steel sector will likely play a key part in achieving this objective.
“We are proud that today India has become the second largest steel producer in the world. We have set a target of producing 300 million tonnes by 2030 under the ‘National Steel Policy’,” PM Modi stated, highlighting the sector’s significant growth trajectory.
Renewed Confidence In The Steel Industry
The Prime Minister further noted that the steel industry now operates with renewed confidence about its future, thanks to the foundation provided by the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
PM Modi further explained that through PM Gati Shakti, various utility services are being integrated into logistics modes, and mine areas along with steel units across the country are being mapped to enhance multi-modal connectivity.
In another significant move, PM Modi shared that the government has decided to use domestically produced steel for constructing public buildings.
This initiative not only supports the growth of the steel sector but also strengthens the demand for Made in India products.
The Prime Minister further remarked, “Steel is a primary component in many other sectors as well. That is why our policies related to the steel industry are also making other industries globally competitive.”
Additionally, PM Modi emphasised the need to address India’s long-standing reliance on high-grade steel imports, especially for defence and strategic sectors.
“We take pride today in the fact that India made the steel used to build its first indigenous aircraft carrier. The strength of Indian steel drives the success of our historic Chandrayaan mission,” Prime Minister Modi noted, underscoring the country’s growing self-reliance in high-grade steel production.

The India Steel 2025 conference serves as an important platform for policymakers, industrialists, and investors to discuss current trends, challenges, and future prospects of the steel industry.
Organised by the Ministry of Steel in collaboration with FICCI, the event also highlights India’s Vision 2047 for a sustainable and competitive steel sector, promoting investment, industrial development, and job creation.
