Mohammed Shami picked up three wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakaravarthy claimed two each as India bowled out Australia for 264 in 49.3 overs in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final at the Dubai International Stadium on Tuesday.
Despite half-centuries from Steve Smith (73) and Alex Carey (61), India’s disciplined bowling attack prevented the ODI world champions from reaching 300.
Early Breakthroughs And Smith’s Resistance
India got an early chance in the first powerplay, but Shami dropped Travis Head on the second ball of the innings. However, Shami struck in his second over, dismissing Cooper Connolly for a duck. Head responded with aggressive strokes, hammering three consecutive boundaries off Shami.
Rohit Sharma introduced Varun Chakaravarthy in the ninth over, and the leg-spinner immediately dismissed Head (39), caught brilliantly by Shubman Gill at long-off.
Smith and Marnus Labuschagne stitched a 56-run stand, but Jadeja trapped Labuschagne lbw for 29 in the 23rd over. Smith reached his half-century off 68 balls, but Jadeja struck again, removing Josh Inglis (11).
Indian Bowlers Dominate In Death Overs
Shami’s return to attack ended Smith’s stay at 73, breaking another crucial stand with Carey. Glenn Maxwell failed to deliver, getting bowled by Axar Patel for 7.
Carey fought back with a 48-ball 61, but Shreyas Iyer’s direct hit ended his innings. Chakaravarthy, Shami, and Pandya wrapped up the Australian tail, dismissing the side for 264 in 49.3 overs.
