India-EU Delegation Talks Mark Milestone In Strategic Partnership

In a major diplomatic development, high-level talks between India and the European Union (EU) took place today, marking one of the largest delegations both parties have assembled for bilateral discussions.

The meeting, which underscores the growing cooperation between the two global players, also highlighted the breadth of future opportunities in key sectors such as trade, technology, and connectivity.

EU’s Strategic Partnership With India

The visit of the European Commission’s President, Ursula von der Leyen, and the College of Commissioners to India represents a historic milestone in the India-EU partnership.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ursula von der Leyen expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for hosting the delegation, calling it a significant symbol of the EU’s appreciation for its partnership with India.

“Dear @narendramodi, thank you so much for hosting us in New Delhi. The @EU_Commission’s visit symbolises how much we value our partnership with India. And how much I value our personal friendship,” Ursula von der Leyen wrote after meeting PM Modi at Hyderabad House.

The talks between the two leaders focused on strengthening the India-EU Strategic Partnership, with an emphasis on pivotal projects such as the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor.

Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “As we enter the third decade of the 🇪🇺🇮🇳 strategic partnership, one thing is clear. The best is yet to come. Together, we can shape the future and be one of the defining partnerships of this century.”

The session reviewed the progress made in several areas, including digital partnerships, clean energy initiatives, and trade.

Jaishankar also highlighted the discussions on cutting-edge technologies and emerging sectors. “We exchanged views on new opportunities in semiconductors, AI, 6G, EVs, Green Hydrogen, and a mutually beneficial trade regime. I am confident that today’s discussions will translate into new economic, trade, and tech linkages,” said the External Affairs Minister.

Strengthening Ties Amid Global Challenges

The European Commission President, accompanied by the College of Commissioners, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon for a two-day visit, following an invitation from Prime Minister Modi.

Upon landing, Ursula von der Leyen posted on X, noting the strategic importance of India for Europe in today’s global climate

“Touchdown in Delhi with my team of Commissioners. In an era of conflicts and intense competition, you need trusted friends. For Europe, India is such a friend and a strategic ally. I’ll discuss with @narendramodi how to take our strategic partnership to the next level,” she added.

A Historic Visit

This is von der Leyen’s third visit to India, following a bilateral visit in April 2022 and her attendance at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in September 2023. Her consistent engagements with Prime Minister Modi further underline the strong and evolving India-EU relationship.

This visit is also notable for being the first official visit of the EU College of Commissioners to India, marking an important step in the EU’s new mandate post-European Parliamentary elections held in June 2024.

As the India-EU strategic partnership continues to grow, both sides are eager to build on the momentum from this high-level dialogue, exploring new areas of cooperation and solidifying their role as key global partners.
