EAM Jaishankar Expresses Concern Over USAID Allegations

EAM S Jaishankar raises concerns over USAID funding allegations, prompting an investigation into possible foreign interference in elections.

S JAISHANKAR ON USAID

On February 22, 2025, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded to troubling claims made by the Trump administration regarding USAID funding in India.

He expressed concerns about the nature of the activities linked to the funds, suggesting that they might have aimed to push a certain narrative during India’s elections.

USAID’s Role and India’s Response

Jaishankar explained that India initially allowed USAID in good faith to support positive initiatives.

However, the recent allegations raised questions about potential interference in India’s internal affairs.

The Indian government has initiated an investigation to verify the validity of these claims.

A Growing Concern on Foreign Influence

Jaishankar stated that if the allegations hold any truth, the public must know who is involved and what their objectives are.

He highlighted the potential risks of external entities attempting to influence India’s democratic processes, warning that such actions could undermine the integrity of the nation’s sovereignty and electoral system.

He emphasized the importance of safeguarding India’s independence from foreign influence, particularly in the electoral process, to ensure that the will of the people remains untainted.

Jaishankar also stressed that national security and democratic integrity must remain protected against any external forces attempting to shape the country’s political landscape.

Political Fallout in India

In the wake of these revelations, political tensions have risen in India.

The BJP has accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of collaborating with foreign entities, including George Soros and Ilhan Omar, to undermine Prime Minister Modi’s government.

Meanwhile, Congress has demanded a detailed report on all foreign funding received by political entities in India.

An Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation unfolds, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has called the allegations deeply troubling.

Authorities are working to uncover the truth behind the claims, but Jaishankar cautioned that it is too early to draw conclusions.
