United States President Donald Trump has designated 9 February as ‘Gulf of America Day’ to mark the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico.
As Air Force One soared over the newly designated area, Trump signed the proclamation on Sunday during his journey to New Orleans for Super Bowl 59.
The change stems from Executive Order 14172, signed on 20 January 2025, directing modifications to the US Continental Shelf.
The order tasked the Secretary of the Interior with renaming the gulf bordering Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending to the maritime boundaries of Mexico and Cuba.
Trump Defends Renaming Decision; Cites Gulf’s Importance
The White House released a statement in which President Trump defended his decision, emphasizing the Gulf’s significance to the United States.
Trump noted, “I took this action in part because, as stated in that Order, the area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.
Alongside the renaming, Trump officially declared 9 February as the first Gulf of America Day, encouraging nationwide observances.
“As my Administration restores American pride in the history of American greatness, it is fitting and appropriate for our great Nation to come together and commemorate this momentous occasion and the renaming of the Gulf of America,” read the White House statement.
The proclamation also urged citizens and public officials nationwide to commemorate the day through appropriate events, ceremonies, and activities.
The White House later shared a map with the updated name on social media, captioned ‘The Gulf of America’.
Trump also posted a video of himself signing the proclamation, reiterating his slogan: “Make America great again, right. That’s what we care about.”
Google Maps confirmed that the name change will be reflected in the US Geographic Names System.
A 27 January post on X stated that for US users, the name will change to ‘Gulf of America’, while it will stay ‘Gulf of Mexico’ in Mexico. Users in other countries will see both names.
Sunday marked Trump’s first visit to the renamed Gulf, reinforcing his administration’s efforts to emphasize American identity and history.
