Arvind Kejriwal, the former Chief Minister of Delhi and convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has sharply criticized the Delhi Police and the Election Commission (EC) following an alleged incident of police manhandling journalists who had traveled from Chandigarh to cover the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Journalists Face Police Misconduct
The Press Club of India (PCI) condemned the actions of the Delhi Police after reports emerged that journalists, who had come from Chandigarh to cover the February 5 elections, were harassed and mistreated while performing their duties. In a statement on X, the PCI expressed concern about the increasing trend of harassment and intimidation faced by journalists nationwide.
The statement read, “Harassing and intimidating journalists has become a daily phenomenon across the country. We urge the Delhi Election Commission and the Election Commission of India to intervene and ensure hassle-free and smooth election coverage.”
The PCI also called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Kejriwal Reacts To The Incident
Reacting to the Press Club of India’s post, investigative journalist Saurav Das condemned the growing violence and lawlessness during elections in the capital. He tweeted, “So much hooliganism in the country’s capital during elections—one can only imagine the state of affairs in other states. The systematic dismantling of the Election Commission has been the biggest assault on India’s democracy.”
In response, Arvind Kejriwal, also commenting on the incident, stated, “Election Commission ceases to exist in India anymore,” reflecting his frustration with the state of the country’s democratic institutions.
The results of the election will be announced on February 8.
