The Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Guwahati has sentenced two more individuals involved in the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) case, sources confirmed on Thursday.
Special NIA Court Sentenced Mufti Suleiman Ali And Imran Hossen
The court sentenced Mufti Suleiman Ali and Imran Hossain to six months’ imprisonment and a Rs 500 fine under the IPC and UAPA. In the event of non-payment, they will face an additional 14 days of SI.
The court also handed the duo Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for the 2 years, 8 months, and 21 days they have already served under the UAPA Act.
Background Of Case
The case, initially registered in March 2022, relates to an ABT module that was linked to the banned international terror organization, Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). This module, led by Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam alias Haroon Rashid, operated in Assam’s Barpeta district.
In a previous court session, the court convicted and sentenced seven other accused in the case. The NIA filed an initial chargesheet against eight individuals in August 2022 and a supplementary chargesheet against two more individuals in August 2023. Investigations and trials in the case are still ongoing.
Special Task Force’s Operation ‘Praghat’ And Arrests
The Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested 14 ABT associates across Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala during its ongoing ‘Operation Praghat.’
The STF revealed that the arrested individuals, including Bangladeshi nationals, were directed by Md Farhan Israk, a close associate of ABT Chief Jasimuddin Rahmani.
As part of their operation, the ABT sent Md Sad Radi, a Bangladeshi national, to India to propagate extremist ideologies. Sad Radi, 32, was arrested from Kerala in December 2024.
These arrests mark significant progress by the STF in dismantling ABT’s network in India and combating global terrorism.
