Prof. Salim Engineer, Vice President of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. In a statement, he said, “We stand in solidarity with those who have lost their loved ones and pray for patience and strength during this time of grief.”
The stampede, which took place during the ongoing Maha Kumbh festival, highlighted significant flaws in crowd management and safety measures at the event. Prof. Engineer emphasized the urgent need for better planning and organization to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims. “This unfortunate incident underscores the critical need for meticulous planning and effective crowd management in such large gatherings,” he stated.

He also emphasized that authorities should prioritize the safety of ordinary devotees over special access or services for VIPs. “The administration must ensure seamless arrangements for common devotees and prioritize their safety, not neglecting this fundamental responsibility,” he added.

Prof. Engineer called on both the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government to take immediate responsibility for the incident. “The lives of ordinary pilgrims deserve the same level of care and protection as VIPs and special guests,” he remarked. He urged the authorities to identify the shortcomings in their arrangements and take corrective actions to prevent future tragedies.
In conclusion, Prof. Engineer reiterated the importance of safeguarding the lives of pilgrims in future events, stressing that adequate measures must be taken to avoid such calamities. “I urge the authorities to take swift corrective measures and ensure that such tragedies never occur again,” he concluded.
