The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) staged protests on Friday against the release of Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’. Amritsar witnessed a significant police presence outside PVR Suraj Chanda Tara Cinema during the protests.
The SGPC has demanded a ban on the movie, alleging it portrays Sikh characters in a negative light.
SGPC Demands Ban On The Film ‘Emergency’
The SGPC president, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, addressed Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in a letter. He accused the film of being ‘politically motivated’. Dhami also claimed the film intended to ‘defame the Sikh community’.
The letter stated, “In a letter to Chief Secretary of the Punjab Government, it was clearly stated that ‘Emergency’ film will not be allowed to be shown in Punjab, as it remains politically motivated with the aim to defame Sikhs.”
SGPC Seeks Ban On Film Over ‘Inaccurate’ Sikh Depictions
In a video shared by the SGPC on X, Dhami mentioned that a demand letter had been submitted to Amritsar’s Deputy Commissioner. The letter called for the halting of the film’s release due to its ‘inaccurate’ portrayal of Sikh characters.
“The role of Sikh characters, especially Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, in this film has been portrayed incorrectly. It always happens that the government often play with the emotions of Sikhs. This is why, we had registered objections earlier before the government to not release the film. However, with the release of the film scheduled in Punjab, we have submitted a letter to DC requesting him to stop the release,” Dhami asserted.

A woman member of the SGPC echoed these concerns. She stated, “After the trailer of the film was released, many registered their objections that history was being presented wrongly and it can hurt the sentiments of the Sikhs. However, this film is still being released. SGPC submitted a letter to DC (Amritsar). Meanwhile, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami has written a letter to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, demanding that the film should not be released in Punjab at least.”
The SGPC has vowed to protest if the film is shown in Punjab. The letter to CM Bhagwant Mann emphasized the potential unrest the screening could cause.
Rekha Sharma, a guard at the Amritsar cinema hall, told ANI, “I am not sure about the reasons, but the screening of this film (Emergency) will not take place here (at the cinema hall).”
