India’s BrahMos missile system is making waves in the Indo-Pacific as Vietnam prepares to sign a $700 million deal to acquire the supersonic cruise missile. This agreement marks a significant step in India-Vietnam defence collaboration, aimed at enhancing regional security.
The BrahMos missile, a product of India’s historic partnership with Russia, has become a sought-after weapon globally. Capable of speeds up to Mach 3, it combines precision, versatility, and power. With a range of 300 kilometres, extendable in advanced versions, the missile can be launched from land, sea, or air, making it a multi-dimensional defence asset.
Proven Precision And Global Credibility
BrahMos cemented its reputation during a 2017 test in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The missile successfully struck a moving sea target from a ground-based launcher, showcasing its unmatched accuracy. Its operational success has since made it a key component of India’s defence exports.
Strengthening India-Vietnam Strategic Ties
Vietnam’s interest in BrahMos reflects its growing trust in India’s defence capabilities. The two nations share a historical camaraderie and mutual concerns over regional security.

Vietnam’s acquisition of BrahMos will enhance its maritime defence, particularly in the contentious South China Sea. This deal follows a similar agreement with the Philippines, which purchased BrahMos in 2022 for $375 million.
A Geopolitical Game-Changer
By exporting BrahMos, India signals its intent to counterbalance regional threats and foster stronger ties with Southeast Asia. Countries like Indonesia have also expressed interest in the missile, further expanding its global footprint.
The deal highlights India’s emergence as a reliable defence exporter. Supported by the Make in India initiative, the nation is transitioning from being a major arms importer to a significant player in the global arms market.
