Uttarakhand will become the first Indian state to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Wednesday that the state has completed all preparations for the roll-out. He confirmed that the UCC will come into effect in January 2025.
The Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board (UIIDB) passed a resolution on UCC implementation during its meeting. Dhami also shared the update on X, calling it a historic step towards equality and justice.
Expert Panel and Legislative Approval
After forming the government in 2022, the BJP-led cabinet created a five-member expert committee under retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai. The panel drafted the UCC, which the state assembly passed on February 7, 2024.
President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Uniform Civil Code Bill 2024. The government issued its notification on March 12, 2024. Officials also finalized the rules under the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand 2024 Act to ensure smooth implementation.
Preparations for Smooth Roll-Out
Dhami directed officials to train personnel and provide essential facilities to enforce the code. The state has launched a portal and mobile app to simplify services like registration and appeals. Officials aim to offer most services online for public convenience.
Dhami stated that the UCC reflects the principles of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas. He said the law would promote equality, empower women and children, and transform Uttarakhand society.
“The UCC will lead the state towards justice and fairness,” Dhami declared.
