Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus stated that the next national elections could be held between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026. He made the announcement in a televised speech on Monday, marking the country’s Victory Day. Yunus said the elections should follow necessary reforms, but due to political consensus, they may occur by the end of 2025 after completing minor reforms like preparing an accurate voter list.
Yunus urged the Election Commission, political parties, and social institutions to implement creative initiatives to make this timeline a reality. He emphasized the importance of 100% voter participation, particularly from first-time voters, in all elections, including local government polls.
Yunus Calls for Full Voter Participation
Yunus highlighted the need to establish a tradition of full voter turnout. He stated that if all first-time voters participate fully, no future government would dare to infringe upon the people’s voting rights. This, he said, would help protect the integrity of elections and strengthen democracy.
He urged all parties to ensure the people’s voting rights are protected and the election process remains transparent and fair.
Yunus Sworn in as Interim Chief Advisor
Muhammad Yunus took the oath as Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor on August 8, following the fall of the previous government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The appointment was made by President Mohammed Shahabuddin, military leaders, and student movement coordinators. Yunus now leads an interim government focused on reforms and preparing for the upcoming elections.
Hasina, 76, began her fourth consecutive term as Prime Minister after her Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party won the January election. Despite the changes, the focus remains on ensuring a smooth, transparent election process for the future.
