South Korea: President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law late Tuesday, imposing strict nationwide restrictions. The decree, effective from 11 pm, bans all political activities, including protests, media independence, and political party operations.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An-su, appointed to lead the martial law command, issued the decree. “All political activities, including those by the National Assembly, regional assemblies, political organizations, and rallies, are banned,” Gen. Park stated.
Nationwide Ban on Political Activities in South Korea
The government justifies the decree as a measure to counter “anti-state forces” threatening democracy. It grants military authorities power to arrest and raid without warrants.
“Fake news, public opinion manipulation, and subversion attempts are banned,” said Gen. Park. Media operations now fall under military control. Trainee doctors on strike must return to work within 48 hours.
The martial law commander now oversees administrative and legal matters. The defense minister supervises the commander, but the president takes control when martial law is declared nationally.
Stock Market Faces Uncertainty Amid Martial Law
The Korea Exchange has not confirmed whether markets will open on Wednesday. The benchmark KOSPI and tech-heavy KOSDAQ are scheduled to open at 9 am
In an unannounced late-night address, President Yoon accused opposition forces of paralyzing the government with “anti-state activities.” He declared martial law to protect democracy and national security.
