Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasized the critical need for a fertility rate of 2.1 to ensure the survival of any society. Speaking at the ‘Kathale Kul (clan) Sammelan’ in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Bhagwat shared his concerns about declining population levels and its implications for society.
Concerns Over Falling Fertility Rates
Bhagwat pointed out that when a society’s fertility rate drops below 2.1, it signals the beginning of its decline. He highlighted that modern population science suggests such a drop could lead to the eventual disappearance of that society. He also mentioned that the fertility rate should not fall below 2.1 to prevent societal collapse.
“The population should not go below 2.1, as per our country’s population policy established in 1998-2002,” said Bhagwat. He stressed the need for a reproduction rate above 2.1 to preserve any race or society.
Impact of Declining Fertility Rates in India
Notably, India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has dropped below 2, according to a recent report. This marks a sharp decline from the 1950s when the TFR was as high as 6 percent. Now, the fertility rate is below the replacement level, a development happening without the enforcement of any coercive two-child norms. A fertility rate of 2.1 is considered the replacement rate, meaning it allows a woman and her partner to be replaced upon death without overall population growth or decline. Bhagwat’s comments underlined the importance of maintaining this number to ensure the continuity of society.
