The Supreme Court confirmed that GRAP-4 restrictions in Delhi NCR will stay in effect until December 2. The Court will review the air pollution case again on that date. During the hearing, the Court criticized the entry of trucks into Delhi and the lack of police enforcement. It pointed out that trucks were allowed entry, but no arrangements were made for their return.
Court Slams Police Over Lack of Implementation of GRAP-4
The Court expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of police at truck entry points. ASG Aishwarya Bhati admitted the lapse and said officials contacted neighboring states to send the trucks back. She reported data collection from MCD toll booths but acknowledged that enforcement was delayed. Justice AS Oka noted that the police acted late, and initial efforts were insufficient.
Focus Shifts to Stubble Burning and State Action
The Court also addressed stubble burning issues. Justice Oka criticized the slow pace of action by neighboring states. He stressed the need for continuous data collection instead of selective timings. ASG Bhati assured the Court that ISRO is working on a monitoring protocol despite setbacks with one satellite. She confirmed ISRO’s commitment to improving the process.
Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy raised concerns about school closures caused by pollution since 2018. The Court highlighted reports advising stubble burning after 4 pm and urged states to avoid such practices. It promised to examine all aspects of pollution, including stubble burning, vehicle emissions, and firecracker use, in the next hearing.
