Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their separation after nearly three decades of marriage.

The couple, who tied the knot in 1995, shared their decision with their fans and the public in a heartfelt statement, expressing both pain and hope as they navigate this difficult chapter in their lives.

Taking to X, AR Rahman posted, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”

‘Emotional Strain Created Insurmountable Gap’

The announcement first made headlines on 19 November, following a statement from Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah.

According to the statement, Saira had decided to separate from Rahman due to emotional strain, which had created a growing gap between the couple.

Despite their deep affection for one another, they found themselves unable to bridge the increasing distance.

The statement read, “After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time.”

“Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life,” it further added.

The couple, who have three children – daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen – first met through an arranged marriage in 1995.

Throughout their marriage, Rahman and Saira have kept a relatively low profile in the public eye, with their family life largely remaining private.

Adding to the public’s plea for privacy, Rahman and Saira’s son, AR Ameen, who is also a singer, took to social media to make a heartfelt request.

Taking to Instagram, he posted, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
