Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their separation after nearly three decades of marriage.
The couple, who tied the knot in 1995, has decided to part ways due to emotional strain, according to a statement from Saira’s lawyer.
The official statement, released by Saira’s lawyer Vandana Shah, explains that despite their enduring love for each other, the couple has struggled to overcome growing tensions.
The statement stated, “After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time.”
“Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life,” it added.
Rahman and Saira have three children together – daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen, who is also a singer.
Rahman’s son, AR Ameen, took to social media to request the public’s respect for their privacy during this challenging time.
Taking to Instagram, he wrote, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
