Voting has commenced today, November 20, for the 288 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and 38 seats in the Jharkhand Assembly. This marks the second phase of voting in Jharkhand, while Maharashtra is holding elections in a single phase. In Jharkhand, voting is taking place for the remaining 38 out of the total 81 seats.

Today marks the second and final phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections, with voting taking place across 38 seats. Among the high-stakes contests, significant attention is focused on 10 key political figures vying for these seats.

Notable candidates include Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the state’s first CM, along with BJP State President Babulal Marandi. Also in the spotlight are JMM’s star campaigner Kalpana Soren, AJSU Party leader Sudesh Mahto, and four sitting ministers—Irfan Ansari, Deepika Pandey Singh, Hafizul Hasan, and Baby Devi. Other key candidates include Assembly Speaker Rabindranath Mahto and Leader of Opposition Amar Bauri.
Maharashtra Assembly Elections
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Assembly elections are witnessing a massive turnout with 9.63 crore voters casting their ballots today. The voter base includes 4.97 crore men, 4.66 crore women, and 6,031 third-gender voters. Additionally, 12,43,192 senior citizens are participating in the election. Over 100,000 polling booths have been set up across the state, where voters will decide the fate of 4,136 candidates.
Voting for all 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra is being conducted in a single phase today, beginning at 7 am and concluding by 6 pm. Following the split in Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a total of 158 parties are contesting in this election, with six major parties participating in two prominent alliances.
The previous assembly elections saw the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance win 105 and 56 seats respectively, while Congress secured 44 and NCP won 54 seats. This year, the contest is largely between two coalitions: Maha Aghadi (which includes Shiv Sena UBT, NCP-SP, and Congress) and Maha Yuti (a coalition of BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP).
Both alliances are making bold claims of victory, and the outcome of today’s election is expected to shape the political landscape of Maharashtra in the coming years.
