In a step towards achieving Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of a Swachh Maha Kumbh, the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam (Urban), Prayagraj, is collaborating with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to install three temporary Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) during the 2025 Maha Kumbh.
These facilities aim to efficiently manage the enormous volume of wastewater generated by the millions of devotees attending the event.
The temporary STPs, costing approximately Rs 3.60 crore, will feature BARC’s cutting-edge ‘Hybrid Granular Sequencing Batch Reactor (HGSBR)’ technology.
This innovative system is capable of treating 500 kiloliters per day (KLD) of wastewater in each plant, ensuring significant reductions in pollutants such as biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD).
The treated water will be safe for irrigation or discharge into local water bodies, supporting a sustainable approach to waste management.
Strategic Locations & Technology Benefits
Authorities have strategically planned the installation of the STPs in ‘Sectors 9, 13, and 15’ of the Maha Kumbh Mela area, where they will process wastewater from temporary toilets and drainage systems.
This initiative will reduce the burden on Prayagraj’s existing sewage infrastructure.
HGSBR technology is particularly effective in biologically eliminating harmful pathogens, ensuring clean and environmentally safe water output.
This is the first time such advanced technology will be deployed during the Maha Kumbh, setting a precedent for future events of this scale.
STPs To Ready By December 2024 For Maha Kumbh
Ashutosh Yadav, Executive Engineer of Jal Nigam, stated that the STPs will likely be operational by 15 December 2024, well ahead of the Maha Kumbh in early 2025.
After the event, the temporary facilities will integrated into Prayagraj’s permanent sewage system, leaving a lasting legacy of improved infrastructure for the city.
This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to upholding environmental and public health standards while facilitating the smooth organization of one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
The deployment of advanced wastewater management technology signifies a major leap towards a cleaner and more sustainable Maha Kumbh.
