The Delhi High Court has rejected the bail plea of Shahrukh Pathan, who was arrested for pointing a pistol at a police officer during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. A bench led by Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma dismissed Pathan’s plea, citing no grounds for release.
Pathan’s Lawyer Argues for Bail
Pathan’s lawyer argued that he faces a maximum of 10 years in jail, and has already spent four years in custody. Despite this, the court upheld the trial court’s December 2023 decision, which denied bail based on Pathan’s conduct and video evidence.
Case Linked to Anti-CAA Protests
The case is connected to the anti-CAA protests in Jafrabad, where Pathan was filmed aiming a gun at a police officer. After fleeing to Uttar Pradesh, he was arrested by the Delhi Police. The riots in February 2020 resulted in 53 deaths.
