Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed Islamic preacher Zakir Naik’s petition, citing derogatory comments against Hindu deities. He argued that Naik’s petition is not worth hearing. The court instructed Mehta to file a written response. It also asked Naik’s lawyer if his client wishes to withdraw the petition. The next hearing is scheduled for October 23.
Naik’s Legal Troubles
During the hearing, Mehta, representing the Maharashtra government, highlighted that Naik has fled the country and does not abide by Indian law. He questioned whether Naik can file a petition under Article 32. Naik’s troubles date back to 2013, when FIRs were registered in several states due to his objectionable remarks about Lord Ganesha. Naik previously approached the Supreme Court, which banned his arrest, and the court issued notices to several state governments for responses.
Allegations of Insulting Religious Sentiments
Naik faces multiple allegations of hurting religious sentiments across various communities. Complaints against him came from the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandals, primarily for his challenges to Hindus on social media. Despite these serious accusations, police have not taken substantial action against him. Naik’s radical Wahhabi ideology further fuels controversy, as he has insulted figures from various religions, including Jesus Christ and Guru Nanak.
