President Droupadi Murmu embarked on her official state visit to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi on Sunday. This marks the first visit by an Indian head of state to these three African nations.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), President Murmu will arrive in Algeria on October 13 and remain there until October 15. This visit comes at the invitation of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The trip aims to strengthen the already cordial relations between India and Algeria, particularly in strategic sectors such as oil and gas, defense, and space cooperation. During her stay, President Murmu will engage in bilateral talks with President Tebboune. She is also expected to meet various Algerian dignitaries, including the Presidents of the Council of Nation and the National People’s Assembly.

Additionally, the President will address the India-Algeria Economic Forum and speak at the Sidi Abdellah Science and Technology Pole University. She will inaugurate the India Corner at Hamma Garden in Jardin d’Essai.
After concluding her visit to Algeria, President Murmu will travel to Mauritania on October 16. There, she will hold discussions with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. She is also set to meet Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djay and Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Marzouk. Furthermore, she will interact with members of the Indian community in Mauritania.
The MEA emphasized that this leg of the trip will further enhance India-Mauritania bilateral relations.
From Mauritania, President Murmu will proceed to Malawi at the invitation of President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, from October 17-19. During her visit to Malawi, she will meet with the country’s leadership, engage with key trade and industry leaders, and connect with the Indian diaspora. The President also plans to visit culturally and historically significant sites.
This trip underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its friendly relations with Malawi. The MEA highlighted that the three-nation visit reflects India’s deep desire to enhance partnerships with countries in Africa.
