DY Chandrachud

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will deliver several significant verdicts on November 8, just days before his retirement on November 10. His two-year tenure as CJI saw landmark rulings, and the final days of his service will address critical constitutional matters.

One major judgment will be on the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University. The seven-member constitutional bench, headed by Chandrachud, reserved its decision in February. The court will rule on whether the university’s minority status should continue under Article 30 of the Indian Constitution, which protects the rights of religious and linguistic minorities to establish and manage educational institutions.

NRC and Liquor Regulation Decisions Awaited

The court will also give its decision on Assam’s NRC. Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, has been challenged, which affects the citizenship status of foreigners who entered Assam before a specific date. A five-member bench has reserved its verdict.

Another anticipated ruling involves the regulation of industrial liquor. A nine-member constitutional bench, headed by the CJI, will decide whether this should fall under state or central authority.

Chandrachud’s Impactful Tenure

CJI Chandrachud, who became Chief Justice in 2022, has delivered several landmark judgments, including the February decision to strike down the BJP’s electoral bond scheme. He has also taken suo motu cognizance in cases like the safety of doctors and caste-based discrimination in prisons. Chandrachud’s rulings on issues like Aadhaar, Section 377, right to privacy, and Sabarimala have left a lasting impact on India’s judiciary.
