Former Punjab CM Beant Singh
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central and Punjab governments regarding a petition filed by Jagtar Singh Hawara. The court has asked for a response within four weeks. Hawara, convicted of the 1995 murder of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has requested a transfer from Delhi’s Tihar Jail to a prison in Punjab.
Hawara’s Demand for Transfer
Hawara, serving life imprisonment, was arrested in 2005. He remains in Tihar Jail since then. He has now filed a petition seeking to be transferred to Punjab. Last year, a lower court acquitted him in a case registered 18 years ago.
Khalistan Plot and Beant Singh Assassination
Hawara was accused of attempting to create Khalistan and spreading terror. Police recovered a pistol, five cartridges, and 450 grams of RDX from him. In 1995, he and his accomplices bombed Beant Singh. Several others involved, including Paramjit Singh Bhyora, Balwant Singh Rajoana, and Jagtar Singh Tara, were also sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2004, Hawara and his companions escaped Burail jail by digging a tunnel.
