Union Home Minister Amit Shah welcomed the Cabinet’s approval for the ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) initiative on Wednesday. He stated this decision marks a significant step toward electoral reforms in India.
Taking to X, Shah wrote, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bharat has been witnessing transformative reforms. Today, Bharat takes a giant stride towards landmark electoral reforms with the Union Cabinet accepting the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on One Nation, One Election.”
Bill Expected in Next Parliamentary Session
The Union Cabinet accepted the proposal for simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections. This decision follows recommendations from the panel led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee submitted its report in March, which the Cabinet reviewed on Wednesday.
Amit Shah emphasized that the ONOE initiative reflects PM Modi’s commitment to enhancing democracy through efficient elections. He noted it would foster economic growth by enabling better resource allocation.
BJP President J.P. Nadda praised the move, stating it will streamline the electoral process. He remarked that holding elections at different times burdens both development efforts and the national treasury.
Nadda added that adopting ONOE would reduce election-related costs and financial strains on the government. The recommendations outline a comprehensive plan for implementing simultaneous elections, starting with concurrent elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, followed by synchronized local body polls within a 100-day period.
