On Monday, Ukrainian agencies and media reported a significant Russian missile and drone strike targeting several regions, including the capital, Kyiv. The attacks resulted in at least three deaths and numerous injuries.
The Ukrainian Defence Ministry announced on X that “Russian occupiers started the week with a massive missile attack on Ukrainian cities.” They called for global unity to end “Russian terror.”
Local media confirmed that the strikes killed at least three people. The Kyiv Independent noted that air raid sirens sounded across the country just before 6 am. The alert remained active in various locations.
According to DTEK Group, which has heavily invested in Ukraine’s energy sector, the state-owned electricity transmission operator Ukrenergo has ordered emergency blackouts nationwide. They stated, “Please note that during emergency shutdowns, schedules that can be predicted in advance do not work,” in a Telegram message.

Reports from Ukrainian media indicated explosions in multiple cities, including Odesa, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Kremenchuk, Dnipro, Khmelnytskyi, Kropyvnytskyi, Kryvyi Rih, Lviv, Rivne, and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts.
Andriy Yermak, Head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, commented on social media, saying, “The desire to destroy our energy will cost the Russians dearly. Their infrastructure will suffer. Permission to strike with Western weapons deep into Russian territory is necessary. We do it ourselves, but such a decision will hasten the end of Russian terror.”
In response to the situation, Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces issued an alert for citizens in the southeastern part of the country. They warned of “increased noise levels” due to Polish and allied aircraft operations in the airspace.
The Polish command noted, “Since early morning, intensive activity of Russian long-range aviation has been observed, associated with strikes on targets in western Ukraine.” They mentioned that the last similar increase in Russian aviation activity occurred on July 8 this year. They assured that all necessary procedures to secure Polish airspace are in place, and the situation is under constant monitoring.
The Kyiv Post reported that Sergiy Lysak, governor of the central Dnipropetrovsk region, described the August 26 attack as “one of the most extensive air assaults on Ukraine,” causing considerable damage to infrastructure and energy facilities.
