Acting Governor Al-Hafiz Bakheet reported that a recent attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in western Sudan, resulted in at least 28 civilian deaths and 46 injuries.

In a statement on Sunday, Governor Bakheet condemned the RSF’s actions, describing them as a series of brutal assaults including shelling of markets, targeting civilian facilities, and attacking homes.

He labeled these acts as new massacres perpetrated by the RSF militia.

The Governor revealed that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and allied armed groups in the Darfur region had successfully repelled the RSF attack on Saturday, inflicting significant losses on the militia.

Despite the violence, he expressed confidence in El Fasher’s resilience and vowed to liberate the city from rebel forces soon.

The RSF has yet to respond publicly to the allegations and the recent attack.

Clashes between the SAF and RSF have been ongoing in El Fasher since 10 May.

The broader conflict, which erupted on 15 April 2023, has claimed at least 16,650 lives and displaced approximately 10.7 million people within Sudan.

Additionally, around 2.2 million individuals have sought refuge in neighboring countries, according to the latest United Nations figures.
