Rajya Sabha Showdown: Chairman Dhankhar Fumes As Jaya Bachchan Questions His ‘Tone’

Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha session on Friday saw a heated confrontation between House Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan.

The altercation began when Dhankhar invited Jaya Bachchan to speak, referring to her as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, the last speaker on this point.” Bachchan took offense at Dhankhar’s tone and called it “unacceptable.”

“I, Jaya Amitabh Bachchan, am an artist and understand body language and expression. Your tone is not acceptable,” she said.

Dhankhar responded angrily, instructing her to take her seat and stressing that all members must adhere to House decorum, regardless of their status. He emphasized that while he respects all Parliamentarians, this does not permit anyone to accuse the Chair without cause.

The Opposition benches protested Dhankhar’s rebuke, leading to a walkout by Opposition members. Dhankhar defended his actions, citing past efforts to address members’ concerns and maintain smooth proceedings.

Later, Jaya Bachchan told the press that she felt humiliated and demanded an apology from the Chair. She also alleged that the Leader of Opposition’s microphone was switched off when he attempted to speak.

This incident follows a previous dispute in which Bachchan objected to being addressed by her husband’s name instead of simply as Jaya Bachchan.
