In a notable development, the Supreme Court of India has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to a petition concerning a matrimonial dispute involving Swami Prasad Maurya, a prominent leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP). The Court has granted the state government a four-week deadline to submit its reply and has temporarily halted the criminal proceedings linked to the case.
The petition, brought before the Court, challenges the decision of the Allahabad High Court. It was filed by Maurya, who is seeking to have the charges against him dismissed. The allegations against Swami Prasad Maurya include accusations of arranging a second marriage for his daughter, Sanghamitra, without a divorce, as well as claims of physical abuse, threats, and conspiracy.

The dispute centers around an individual named Deepak Kumar Swarnkar, who alleges that he married Sanghamitra on January 3, 2019, at her residence. Swarnkar contends that he and Sanghamitra were in a live-in relationship from 2016 until their purported marriage. However, Sanghamitra had publicly declared herself as unmarried in an affidavit during the 2019 elections. It was later discovered that Sanghamitra had obtained a divorce in May 2021.
Swarnkar’s complaint also names Sanghamitra and four other individuals, including her father, Swami Prasad Maurya. According to Swarnkar, despite his claims of marriage, Sanghamitra denies the union, adding further complexity to the case. The Supreme Court’s intervention marks a significant turn in this ongoing legal battle.
