Preeti Sudan, former Union Health Secretary, is likely to assume the role of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Chairperson from Thursday, as per Article 316 A of the Indian Constitution.
Sudan, an IAS officer from the 1983 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will succeed Manoj Soni, who recently resigned from the position.
Sudan brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having retired as Union Health Secretary in July 2020.
Her distinguished career includes pivotal roles as Secretary in the Ministry of Food & Public Distribution, Ministry of Women & Child Development, and Ministry of Defence.
Her tenure is likely to last until April 2025.
Throughout her career, Sudan however has been instrumental in launching several significant national initiatives.
She played a key role in the development and implementation of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Ayushman Bharat programs, and was actively involved in legislative efforts concerning the National Medical Commission, Allied Health Professionals Commission, and the ban on e-cigarettes.
In addition to her domestic contributions, Sudan has garnered international experience.
She served as a Consultant for the World Bank and held leadership positions in several global health and development organizations.
These include Chairing COP-8 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Vice-Chairing the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, Chairing the Global Digital Health Partnership, and being a member of the WHO’s Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response.
