The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways approved a research proposal by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). The project will aim to create value from dredged sediments by converting them into aggregates suitable for various construction fields.
The research ‘Valorisation of Dredged Sediments’ aims to achieve sustainable maritime practices. The research is estimated to cost Rs 46,47,380 over three years.
By converting dredged sediment into a useful resource, the novel strategy hopes to promote environmentally friendly growth and preservation. The primary focus is on sediment, which is normally seen as waste.

“By converting dredged sediments into useful construction aggregates, we can address both environmental concerns and resource utilisation efficiently,” said the ministry.
Following extensive deliberations, the Research Committee suggested that the idea be given additional consideration in light of the study’s possible advantages. In accordance with this suggestion, the idea has been formally accepted.
This study project represents a significant development in environmentally friendly maritime operations.
It effectively handles resource usage and environmental issues by converting excavated sediments into valuable construction aggregates.
The Ports Ministry said it is dedicated to fostering research and innovation with leading academic institutions within the maritime sector.
