Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday following his election as Iran’s new President.

Expressing optimism for the future, PM Modi affirmed India’s commitment to deepening the longstanding and warm bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Congratulations @drpezeshkian on your election as the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Looking forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our warm and long-standing bilateral relationship for the benefit of our peoples and the region.”

India and Iran have seen significant advancements in their partnership across various sectors, notably in connectivity initiatives.

This progress has been particularly notable during the tenure of Iran’s late President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, whose tragic passing earlier this year deeply impacted both nations.

India observed a day of state mourning to honor President Raisi and other officials who lost their lives in a helicopter crash, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

During President Raisi’s term, Iran joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) under India’s presidency, highlighting the growing diplomatic ties and mutual cooperation between the two countries.

Efforts have been intensified in infrastructure projects, with a focus on enhancing connectivity through initiatives such as the Chabahar project and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

The INSTC, a 7,200 km-long multimodal trade corridor linking Russia with India via Iranian ports, stands as a testament to the strategic partnership between India and Iran in regional connectivity and economic cooperation.
