Keir Starmer became the UK’s new prime minister after his Labour Party won a landslide victory in the general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule, vowing to rebuild Britain and appoint his ministerial team.

Following his victory, Starmer appointed Rachel Reeves as the UK’s first woman finance minister and David Lammy as foreign secretary, becoming Labour’s first prime minister since Gordon Brown in 2010.

Flag-waving throngs of cheers from Labour activists gathered on Downing Street as the 61-years-old pledged to rebuild the UK after King Charles III invited him to form a government at Buckingham Palace. After Sunak’s meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, Starmer took over as the 58th prime minister of the UK.

“Now, our country has voted decisively for change, for national renewal and a return of politics to public service”, Starmer said in his first speech as PM.

“The work of change begins immediately, but have no doubt, we will rebuild Britain”, Starmer added.

The Labour Party gained 412 seats in the 650-member House of Commons, up 211 from the last election in 2019. Sunak’s Conservatives won only 121 seats, down 250 MPs from the previous election.

The Labour Party received 33.7 percent of the vote, while the Conservatives received 23.7 percent.
