Hemant Soren was granted bail in a land scam case by the Jharkhand High Court on June 28, which found insufficient evidence supporting the ED’s charges against him. He had resigned as CM on January 31 before his arrest.
The BJP has criticized Champai Soren’s tenure as a stopgap measure, alleging that the Soren family does not relinquish power easily. They claimed that even during Champai’s tenure, he faced humiliation and interference in governance matters from outside the government.
Looking ahead to the Jharkhand Assembly elections later this year, Congress leaders believe that Hemant Soren’s leadership will strengthen the INDIA Front alliance, potentially yielding better electoral outcomes. They argue that recent electoral results suggest support for Hemant Soren, with accusations of corruption failing to impact his political standing.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the INDIA Front secured five seats in the tribal-dominated state, while the BJP-led NDA won 10 out of 14 seats. JMM and Congress won three and two seats, respectively, with notable victories over prominent BJP figures.
The party contends that the legal proceedings against Hemant Soren were politically motivated, citing the High Court’s observations in his bail order as evidence of a witch hunt.
