Brij Bhushan Singh
On Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a significant decision regarding the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat, dropping incumbent MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh amidst accusations of sexual harassment by female wrestlers. Instead, the party nominated his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, for the upcoming elections.
Karan Bhushan Singh, the younger son of Brij Bhushan, currently holds positions of influence within Uttar Pradesh, serving as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association and chairperson of the Cooperative Bank in Nawabganj, Gonda district.
The decision to replace Brij Bhushan with his son came amidst mounting pressure and protests from various quarters, especially female wrestlers who accused the former MP of sexual harassment during his tenure as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Notable wrestlers such as Sakhi Malik and Bajrang Punia led demonstrations demanding accountability and legal action against Brij Bhushan.

Following the protests, the Delhi Police registered a case against Brij Bhushan under several sections of the Indian Penal Code related to sexual harassment and intimidation. Despite being granted bail later on, the allegations cast a shadow over his political career.
Brij Bhushan, a six-time MP and a significant figure in the region, has also been involved in various educational initiatives, operating around 50 private educational centers in his constituency.
The Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat, where these events unfold, is scheduled to vote on May 20 during the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. In the previous election in 2019, Brij Bhushan secured a substantial number of votes, but the recent controversy has reshaped the political landscape of the constituency.
