India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar disclosed on Monday that India is actively investigating information regarding an alleged plot to assassinate Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, citing national security concerns. Jaishankar refrained from divulging further details about the ongoing investigation during a media briefing in response to comments made by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti.
When asked about Garcetti’s assertion that the alleged involvement of an Indian government official in the assassination plot had crossed a “red line,” Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to investigating the matter due to its implications for national security. He stated, “India is conducting a probe because we believe our national security interests are involved in that investigation.”
The investigation was prompted by an indictment filed by US prosecutors in a Manhattan court last November, which implicated Indian national Nikhil Gupta in a plot to kill Pannun on American soil, allegedly at the behest of an unnamed Indian official. Gupta, currently detained in the Czech Republic, is challenging his extradition to the US.

Garcetti highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating that any government’s involvement in a plot to assassinate a foreign citizen constitutes a “red line.” He emphasized the importance of upholding sovereignty and citizens’ rights, noting that India and the US are collaborating on the investigation.
In a separate issue, Jaishankar addressed concerns regarding Indian nationals being coerced into joining the Russian Army and fighting in the Ukraine conflict. He stated that India has vigorously raised the issue with the Russian government and is working to ensure the safe return of affected individuals to India. Despite advisories urging citizens to avoid risking their safety, some individuals have chosen to return to Ukraine for study or work.
Overall, Jaishankar’s statements underscore India’s commitment to addressing security challenges and safeguarding the rights and well-being of its citizens both domestically and internationally.
